Passive inhalation of marijuana smoke is sometimes put forward as a reason for a positive drug test result. Research has shown that this is improbable. As an example, in one study volunteers were exposed to smoke from cigarettes containing a known concentration of THC (the active ingredient of marijuana) over six one hour periods. The marijuana smoke was so intense that the volunteers had to wear goggles. The highest level detected by GC/MS analysis was only one third of the internationally accepted cut-off level for marijuana.

A simple scientific fact: drugs, which are ingested, circulate in a person's bloodstream which nourishes the developing hair follicle.

Trace amounts of the drugs become entrapped in the core of the hair shaft in amounts roughly proportional to those ingested. These traces remain in the hair as it grows out from the head at a rate of approximately one-half inch per month.

A person's drug usage history can be obtained from the hair of any individual. Drug use can be detected from months, even years past, depending on the length of the sample.

Standard drug tests currently provide a 90 day history of drug use.
